Technical information

Biographical / historical context

In 1963, Breuillaud pursues two contrasting lines of enquiry: on the one hand, works in which the material darkens and becomes compact; on the other, lighter, almost diaphanous images that continue the exploration of membranes and intermediate states inherited from 1962. This pastel belongs to the latter tendency, but intensifies its expressive charge by introducing dark cavities into a luminous field, where they act as centres of gravity. The work thus occupies a point of balance at which transparency is no longer merely airy: it becomes a fragile envelope, pierced by opaque nuclei and by an internal tension already characteristic of the artist’s investigations in 1963.

Formal / stylistic description

In a vertical format, a warm yellow background, largely left open, surrounds a large central mass with supple contours, like an upright presence. The form consists of layers and rubbed passages combining bluish greens, muted greys, earthy pinks and faded whites, with more abraded areas that reveal the grain of the support. Two dark zones dominate the whole: on the left, a small, almost circular cavity; on the right, a larger nucleus edged in black, whose dark-green centre seems to recede into the material. Fine drips and renewed vertical strokes connect these nuclei to the surrounding field, while the edges of the form fray into coloured halos, giving the image a quality that is at once organic and spectral.

Comparative analysis / related works

Through its economy of means and compositional stillness, this sheet differs from the proliferating red choreographies of the 63B group; rather, it provides a restrained, meditative counterpoint to them. It extends the logic of transitional works built around membrane-like forms, in which the light background acts as a surrounding medium, yet is distinguished by the insistent presence of two dark “chambers”. These anticipate, though without the later dramatic intensity, the cavities and coagulated centres the artist would develop in his denser works of 1963. The tension between luminous reserve and dark nuclei gives this image a pivotal position within the corpus, between experimental transparency and the emergence of an internal architecture.

Justification of dating and attribution

The dating to 1963 is supported by the roughness achieved with pastel, thicker and more layered than in earlier studies, and by the establishment of a structural contrast between a light surrounding field and strongly emphasised black nuclei. The inscription “63” on the support, together with the visible signature, reinforces this chronological placement. The attribution to André Breuillaud is consistent with the artist’s formal vocabulary at this date: a single organism-like form, uncertain boundaries, overlapping veils of colour, and the emergence of internal cavities that organise the composition.
